There is an historical tradition at St John’s Church Worsthorne for the importance of Choral Worship, which has developed over the past thirty years through the devotion and commitment of key people including, Organist and Choirmaster Diana Preston, Choirmaster Derek Bell and Organist and Choirmaster Philip Mitchell all of whom introduced a wide ranging Choral Itinerary. In these days where church choirs are far and few between, we are proud to maintain this tradition today through the Leadership of our Choirmaster and Organist James Berry who brings a youthful freshness and new ideas. Our activities include a wide range of services including Matins, Evensong, Eucharist and special events as well as occasional visits to cathedrals and other churches especially our sister church of St John the Divine, Cliviger. The Choir is also in constant demand to provide Choral leadership at the many weddings throughout the year.
The Choir at St John’s is a voluntary group of approximately twenty six people comprising of adult singers and a small number of younger people. Our music includes selections from many well-known Composers of Choral Music including, Thomas Tallis, Charles Stanford, Bob Chilcott and John Rutter, the latter with whom the Choir experienced a full day of singing in Leeds Parish Church in September 2010 when John introduced a new Anthem written for Cancer research UK “Look to The Day” (2008) which is now included in the ever growing list of our music. We are proud of the fact that our membership enables us to perform pieces requiring four-part harmonies and thereby provide an excellent portfolio which is well recognised and appreciated by our Parishioners and the local community. In the forthcoming year the Choir, under James’ direction and with the support and commitment of our minister, Father Keith Henshall we are looking to further develop through the introduction of new Choral pieces and events.
The Choir are always open to new opportunities to support the very important role that music has in worship and are interested in welcoming new members from the age of ten upwards. The Choir rehearses on Friday evenings in church from 5.30pm until 7pm and anyone interested in coming along can be assured of a fun, enjoyable experience and a very warm welcome and not least the opportunity to share in the singing of our ever expanding repertoire.
